Brew Better Coffee With The Freshest Coffee Facts, Unfiltered Brewing Guides, & Curated Coffee Buying Guides

A Tiny Coffee Roastery & Tiny Footprint

At our coffee roastery, we package our organic beans in Biotrē™ bags made from 60% wood pulp (biodegradable) and 40% PE. The PE includes an additive that makes it “oxodegrade” over 5-10 years vs. the estimated 1,000 years needed for normal plastic!

We stamp the bags with the world’s first sustainable ink – Algae Ink™ by Living Ink Technologies. Algae Ink uses algae cells for pigments, making it safer and cleaner to work with. And it’s more compatible with the recycling and composting process. Algae Ink is a net negative carbon technology; each bucket of ink sequesters the same carbon as two trees.

Even our labels are compostable! Check them out today with free delivery on every order for San Diego locals!

We’re ShedLight Coffee Roasters, and we’re a women-owned San Diego coffee roaster here to help you brew better coffee at home today while saving the planet tomorrow. My name is Heather Calatrello, and along with my husband, Chris, I founded ShedLight Coffee Roasters to help others learn how to brew better coffee at home. Chris and I are coffee-obsessed home brewers and roasters who believe that brewing delicious coffee and helping the environment go hand in hand.

Heather Calatrello ShedLight Coffee Roasters, brew better coffee

We’ve tested countless coffee machines and equipment, sampled hundreds of roasts, and shared plenty of laughs while studying and learning about coffee over the years. Getting here has been a long journey for us, and we’ve spent the last 10+ years experimenting, tasting, and traveling the globe to expand our coffee roasting and brewing skills.

When we weren’t researching, roasting, or brewing coffee, we would volunteer our time (and/or resources) to environmental organizations working to tackle the most urgent issues for our planet.

And while these efforts were meaningful, we never felt like we were doing enough. We can’t imagine a world without coffee; we knew we had to do something big. (or, in this case, really tiny)

So we repurposed a small finished shed in our Kensington backyard (which previously housed a 20-year-old oven and approximately 32 empty moving boxes) into a coffee roasting shed. It wasn’t much at first, but it was a step toward encouraging our friends and family to support organic farming, shop local, eliminate one-cup brewing pods, and, of course, enjoy better coffee at home.

Over the years that followed, that little coffee shed grew into a micro coffee roastery, complete with a welcoming barn light beside the door. And thus, ShedLight Coffee was born.

We are committed to making small changes every day to improve the environment around us. We run our coffee roasters on solar power, and we only roast organic, fair-trade coffee beans. We say no to single-use items like one-cup brewing pods and plastic straws, lids, and cups.

We’re a (tiny) solar-powered San Diego coffee roaster working to create significant change. Our organic coffee beans are roasted in small batches in the coffee shed and delivered locally in San Diego via our electric Mini Cooper. If you see us on the road, be sure to give us a honk and a 👋🏼

We love talking about coffee almost as much as we love drinking it. We established this site as a place to share helpful coffee brewing advice, buying guides, and fascinating coffee facts with those who want to improve their coffee experience. (and, of course, buy some locally roasted coffee)

And if we can save the planet along the way, that’d be pretty sweet too. If you love coffee as much as we do and want to learn how to brew better coffee at home, you’re in the right place.

It’s a big goal—we get it—but often, the small changes have the most significant impact. And a cup of coffee is a small thing. We believe your morning caffeine fix should be more than just a quick convenience—a way to start the day with something pleasurable and thoughtful.

And no day should start with a crappy cup of coffee.

You don’t have to be a professionally trained barista to brew delicious coffee. We’re here to help you learn how to brew the perfect cup of coffee from the comfort of your own home. We’ll break down coffee hipster stereotypes and common misconceptions to demystify the brewing process and awaken your inner barista. Soon, you’ll see that brewing epic coffee isn’t complicated.
